IRISH LOSE SECTIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP HEARTBREAKER VS PICKERINGTON CENTRAL

The Irish season came to an end after a hard fought, heartbreaking loss to Pickerington Central by the score of 59-57 in overtime.

An Antonio Bisutti three pointer gave the Irish a 3-0 lead, but Central rebounded (especially on the offensive boards) to take an 11-7 lead after one quarter. Bisutti added another basket to lead the Irish with 5 points in the quarter, while Chase Sult scored the other 2 points. The story of the first quarter was 5 Irish turnovers and numerous Pickerington Central offensive rebounds.

The Irish fell behind 17-10, but then battled back to tie the game at 24 before a late basket by Central gave them a 26-24 halftime lead. Joshua Ashwill scored the first 15 points for the Irish in the quarter, while Kalib Wallace added the final basket. The Irish reduced their turnovers to 3 in the quarter; however Central continued to hit the offensive boards hard, scoring most of their first half points on offensive put-backs.

The third quarter was tight throughout and tied at 38, before once again a late basket by Central, this time a three pointer gave them a 41-38 lead. Ashwill led the Irish with 5 points in the quarter, while Bisutti added 4, Travis Yates 3 and Travis Wehder 2.

Central jumped out to a 47-38 lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Irish battled back to tie the game at 49 on a long three ball by Ashwill with 19 seconds remaining. Central missed a potential game winning shot at the buzzer forcing overtime. Ashwill scored 8 fourth quarter points, while Yates added the other three on three-ball.

Although there were many ties, the Irish took their first lead since 3-0 at 51-49 in overtime after Ashwill sunk both ends of a 1 and 1. After falling behind 53-51, an Ashwill three gave the lead back to the Irish at 54-53. The Irish fell behind again 57-54 before Wehder split a pair of free throws to make it 57-55. Central went up 59-55 before a Bisutti basket cut it to 59-57. The Irish were forced to foul and Pick Central missed both free throws with 4 seconds remaining. The Irish rebounded and Ashwill managed to get off a three just inside of half court, that looked dead on but was just off, and Central hung on for the 59-57 win.

Ashwill had a big night offensively, finishing with 33 points. After missing his first shot of the game, a three ball that was in and out, he made 19 of his next 20 shots, including 10 of 10 free throws and 5 of 5 three pointers, before missing the final shot at the buzzer. He added 5 rebounds. Bisutti added 11 points and 4 assists, Yates added 6 points, Wehder 3 points, Sult 2 points and Wallace 2 points and 4 assists. The Irish missed big man Zac Brown who was unable to play.

The primary downfall for the Irish was allowing Central 21 offensive rebounds which led to 59 shots for Central compared to 34 for the Irish, a difference of 25 attempts. Comparatively, the Irish managed 3 offensive rebounds on the night. The Irish managed to stay in the game with hot shooting where they shot 19-34 from the field for 56%, compared to 24-59 for Central for 41%. The Irish also fared better on three pointers where they were 8-17 for 47% compared with 2-12 for 17% for Central. The Irish were 11-14 from the FT line for 79% compared with 9-14 for 64% for Central.

The Irish finish the season at 18-5.

It is difficult and heartbreaking to see the season come to an end, especially with such a tough loss. It has been fun watching this team play, and there have been many more high points than low.

To our seniors, Joshua Ashwill, Antonio Bisutti, Chase Sult, Braxton Wallace, Travis Wehder and Travis Yates, what a great season!!! Well wishes and success in whatever the future holds for you! It has been great getting to know all of you and your families, and I look forward to the upcoming banquet.

To the underclassmen, Zac Brown, Kalib Wallace, Andrew McKinley, Derek Scott and Bryan Chu, enjoy the remainder of your high school years and especially the basketball experience. It will be over before you know it!!

IRISH HOLD ON AGAINST KILBOURNE ON SENIOR NIGHT

A huge Senior Night crowd watched the Irish hold on late to defeat Hard Road rival Worthington Kilbourne by the score of 45-42 in the last regular season home game for Joshua Ashwill, Antonio Bisutti, Chase Sult, Braxton Wallace, Travis Yates and Travis Wehder. The Irish seniors do get one more game on their home court as the new tournament procedures have sectional games at the site of the higher seeded team versus at a neutral site. The Irish seniors will be playing their final home game on Wednesday, Feb 27th at 7:00 PM versus the winner of the Pickerington Central-Delaware game.

The Irish led 10-8 after one quarter, and 24-12 at halftime. Bisutti led the Irish with 7 first half points, all in the 2nd quarter. Kalib Wallace added 5, also all in the 2nd quarter. Wehder and Yates each had 4, while Sult and Ashwill each had 2. The 24-12 halftime lead could have been much more, however the Irish connected on only 1of 8 free throws in the half.

An 11-0 run by Kilbourne to start the third quarter made the score 24-23, before a pair of free throws by Yates, followed by a three pointer by Zac Brown made it 29-23. Another Brown basket in the quarter gave the Irish a 31-27 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Two baskets by Yates and then two by Wehder made it 39-33 Irish. The last three were assisted by Ashwill. The Irish fared much better in 2nd half free throw shooting, connecting on 8 of 10, including 6 of 8 to seal the victory. After Kilbourne closed to 39-36, two Bisutti free throws followed by two Ashwill free throws made it 43-36. Bisutti then split of pair of free throws to make it 44-36, and following a Kilbourne 3 pointer Ashwill split of pair to make it 45-39. Kilbourne added a three at the buzzer to make the final count 45-42.

Bisutti scored 10 points and added 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Yates scored 10 points and added 3 rebounds. Wehder contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds, while Ashwill had 5 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Wallace had 5 points and 2 assists, while Brown added 5 points and 3 rebounds.

The Irish won the rebounding battle 28-27, and had 12 assists to 8 for Kilbourne. The Irish hit 17-40 (43%) from the field compared with 18-43 (42%) for Kilbourne. The Irish finished the night hitting 9 of 18 free throws for 50%, while Kilbourne hit just 2 of 6 for 33%.

The Irish finish the regular season at 18-4, and 11-3 in the conference, which was good enough for second place behind Westerville North (14-0).

JV KEEPS WOLVES AT BAY

The Irish JV showed a glimpse of the future ironically on Senior Night and pulled past an evenly matched Worthington Kilbourne to end the year with a WIN 47-43!

The Wolverines drew first blood with a couple quick baskets. Careless ball handling had us see black and blue far too often. Andrew McKinley landed the first 2 for the Irish and scored in every period to finish as high scorer with 15 points. Sean Gary, back from an injury, shook up the Wolves with 2 steals early on. Scott Berg sunk 2 at the stripe. Spencer Stevenson dished inside to Chu for 2! Irish won the first period 9-8!

McKinley, who was aggressive all night, had a defensive rebound and launched a bomber to Berg who laid it in for 2. Stevenson was in the mix underneath and came away with a couple rebounds that gave us more chances. Berg snagged a rebound and went coast to coast for 2! Wolves still had us in their claws as half ended with them ahead 19-18. Berg popped a 3 to open the 2nd half and oozed inside for a couple more. Derrick Scott, who was hustling all game, fought for a vital possession toward end of 3rd. Ball was passed to Berg who kicked to Nick Pothoven, who swooshed a 3 from the corner to start the 4th. McKinley found his way inside for 2 more to pull us within 1! Cameron Logwood saw some time and made em when we needed em, hitting a jumper and scoring inside to put 5 on the board in the 4th. Wolves scored on a turnover or two and their lead widened to 6. Stevenson had a put back for 2 and 1 and the gap was narrowing! Elyjah Nelson, who was out all season due to a serious illness, saw a few minutes early in the game and showed why he may be the missing piece of the puzzle. A nice move inside got him 2 and fouled. He confidently sunk his shot at the stripe to TIE the game 38 all! The crowd roared their approval, as Nelson got to the line again and hit the go ahead shot too! Berg got fouled on an inbounds play and got one at the line. McKinley was clutch at the line in the final minutes hitting his foul shots ! What a perfect way to welcome Elyjah Nelson back to the hardwood! Irish beat our Hard Road foes 47-43 and had NINE guys score! Thanks for making my winter a blast Irish! Good luck to all the seniors in their future pursuits!

McKinley (14), Berg (13), Nelson (5), Logwood (5), Scott (3), Stevenson (3), Chu (2), Pothoven (2), Mielke (1)

IRISH FROSH FALL IN FINALE TO WOLVES

The Irish Frosh dug themselves an early hole and were playing catch up the rest of the game as they took on the Worthington Kilbourne Wolves on Friday evening. Another strong 4th quarter rally by the Irish was not enough as they would fall 56-48.

Slow starts have plagued the Irish during the past few games and this one was no different. The Wolves would jump out quickly by scoring the first 4 points. Jason Greiwe would finally get the Irish on the board with a bucket and would add another one later in the quarter. Nate Mielke would add 2 points of his own and Carter Brown would get in on the action with a nice basket that was followed a short time later by a Paul Lombardo free throw. The Wolves were firmly in control at the end of the first quarter with a 14-9 lead.

The Wolves were able to extend that lead in the second quarter as they capitalized on some defensive breakdowns by the Irish. These breakdowns along with some hot shooting by the Wolves allowed them to score 17 points in the quarter. The Irish would try to close the gap, but could only muster 8 points. Mielke would add a couple of free throws, Brian Johnson would score two points and Cameron Logwood would add a couple of baskets. At halftime the score was 31-17 Kilbourne.

The Irish would pick up the defensive intensity in the third quarter as they fought their way back into the game. The Wolves would only be able to score 8 points in the quarter. On the offensive end for the Irish they started to find the range. Mielke would score 5 points in the quarter while Logwood added 6 more. Nick Pothoven finally found the range as he added 4 points of his own. At the end of the third quarter the Irish cut the Wolves lead in half as the score was 39-32.

The Irish would continue to cut into the Wolves lead in the fourth quarter as their hot shooting continued. On the defensive end the Irish continued to buckle down as you could see some frustration beginning to show on the Wolves faces. A three pointer by Pothoven with a minute to go would cut the Wolves lead to 3 points, but the Irish would get no closer. A couple of missed opportunities in the final minute and solid free throw shooting by the Wolves would make the final score 56-48.

Logwood led the Irish in scoring with 13 points. Mielke added 11, Pothoven 10, Greiwe 6, Brown and Lombard 3 each, and Johnson 2.

The Irish Frosh showed tremendous improvement throughout the season both as a team and individually. There were definitely a few highlights and some good things to build on for the next three seasons. They finished the season with a record of 8-13.

IRISH RALLY FALLS SHORT VS REYNOLDSBURG

A frantic fourth period comeback fell short, as the Irish fell to Reynoldsburg (15-5) by the score of 69-59.

The Irish jumped out to a 4-0 lead early, before Reynoldsburg closed the quarter on a 13-5 run to take a 13-9 lead after one. They then outscored the Irish 18-12 in the second quarter to take 31-21 halftime lead. Reynoldsburg pressure caused a number of first half turnovers leading to easy buckets by Reynoldsburg. After falling behind 26-13, the Irish closed to 28-21 before an Irish foul on a three point attempt at the buzzer led to three Reynoldsburg free throws, of which all were converted. First half scoring was led by Joshua Ashwill with 9, Antonio Bisutti and Travis Yates 4 each, and Chase Sult and Kalib Wallace 2 each.

The Irish struggled early in the third quarter, with turnovers and cold shooting allowing Reynoldsburg to take their biggest lead of the night at 50-32 before a late three pointer by Ashwill made it 50-35 after three.

The Irish took care of the basketball in the final period, which allowed them to mount a furious comeback. The Irish went on 12-2 run to start the quarter on baskets by Zac Brown, Wallace, two free throws by Travis Wehder, a basket by Ashwill, another basket by Wallace and a basket by Sult and the Irish were trailing 52-47 with 5 minutes remaining. After a Reynoldsburg free throw, a Bisutti free throw made it 53-48 before a three by Reynoldsburg made it 56-48. Wallace would immediately answer with a three to make it 56-51. A free throw by Reynoldsburg, followed by two free throws by Bisutti made it 57-53. After four Reynoldsburg points made it 61-53, an Ashwill three made it 61-56. The Irish were forced to foul, and Reynoldsburg twice missed free throws on the same trip, but both times came away with critical offensive rebounds. The Irish were forced to foul the remainder of the game and Reynoldsburg converted at the line, pulling away for the 69-59 win.

For the night Ashwill was high scorer with 22 points and added 4 steals. Wallace provided an offensive spark with 7 points in the fourth quarter, and 9 for the game. Bisutti added 9 points. Wehder had 5 points and 6 rebounds, while Sult, Yates and Brown had 4 points each and Andrew McKinley 2.

Most statistical categories were close as Reynoldsburg won the rebounding battle 25-24, while Scioto had 9 assists to 8 for the Raiders. The Irish committed 16 turnovers to 17 for Reynoldsburg. Reynoldsburg shot a little better hitting 18-32 field goals for 56% to the Irish's 19-44 for 43%. They also hit 27-36 free throws for 75% to 17-22 for the Irish (77%).

The Irish fall to 17-4 on the season and play their final regular season game during Senior night at home on Friday, Feb 15 against "Hard Road" rival Worthington Kilbourne.

REYNOLDSBURG WRAPS UP THE IRISH

It seemed as though the Raiders had 10 guys on the floor to our 5 in the first half. They stole the ball before we could get a shot off and collapsed toward the basket, finding each other in traffic time after time. Andrew McKinley managed a 3 to put us on the board. Derrick Scott handed off to Nick Pothoven for a couple more. Scott Berg, who had a constant companion, was held to 3 points for the half. Freshmen, Jason Greiwe fought for a couple hooks under the basket for 4, and Pothoven made a jumper and powered in for another 2 and 1, but the Raiders were just too quick. McKinley landed 2 more 3's, which was vital, but the hole had been dug as the score was 28-40 at the half.

Our second half turnaround never came, as the Raiders picked our pockets at will. Trying to cover guys inside, just left an outside shooter open who was right on target. Berg managed to land a couple 3's and a deuce in the third, but he was the only one who scored that period. Cameron Logwood did good inside and managed to break up a few scores. He had a couple put backs for 4 and a jumper for 2. Derrick Scott wove his way inside for 2 and got both of this at the stripe. Although 8 different players scored, it just wasn't enough to defray the damage and the Raiders dominated 75-53. Berg (16), McKinley (9), Scott (9), Logwood (6), Pothoven (5), Greiwe (4), Stevenson (2), Johnson (2)

IRISH FROSH SUFFER TOUGH LOSS TO THE RAIDERS

The Irish Frosh could not hold onto a late fourth quarter lead as the Reynoldsburg Raiders escaped with a 42-39 victory on Tuesday night. The Raiders went on a 10-0 run halfway through the fourth quarter that was too much for the Irish to overcome.

The Raiders started quickly in the first period as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead. The Irish would come roaring back as they went on a 12-0 run to end the quarter. Jason Greiwe was able to get the Irish on the board with a layup inside. Amari McMahon and Nick Pothoven then drained back to back three pointers that tied the score at 8. Pothoven would then knock down a runner at the elbow to give the Irish their first lead of the game. Nate Mielke completed a tough drive in the lane and Pothoven would hit a short baseline jumper to make the score 14-8 Irish after one quarter.

The second quarter would be a complete reversal of the first period as the Irish would start quickly. Cameron Logwood got free inside for a layup and then would drain two free throws to give the Irish their largest lead at 18-8. Reynoldsburg was able to regain momentum as they would score nine straight points to cut the Irish lead to 18-17. Logwood would then drain a long jumper from the top of the key to extend the Irish lead. That would be the last points of the quarter for the Irish as Reynoldsburg would score the next five points to take a 22-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The third quarter was back and forth as each team traded baskets the entire period. Mason Mooney, who was seeing his first action of the year, would drain a long three pointer to get the Irish started. Pothoven would add a layup inside and Logwood would hit a baseline jumper to give the Irish the lead. Amari McMahon was fouled on a strong drive and would hit both free throws. McMahon then got free inside on an out of bounds play underneath for a layup that would give the Irish a three point lead at 31-28 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was very exciting as both teams would go on mini runs. Pothoven knocked down a three pointer in transition and Logwood would score on a put-back inside to give the Irish a six point lead with three minutes to go in the game. The Raiders would not go away and their defensive intensity would lead to a couple of Irish turnovers. The Raiders would capitalize on those turnovers and would go on a 10-0 run of their own to give them a 40-36 lead with under a minute to go. Pothoven was able to get free and knocked down a three pointer from the wing to cut the Raider lead to 40-39 with 27 seconds left. An intentional foul by the Irish would give the Raiders two shots and the ball. They made both free throws to extend their lead to 42-39. The Irish would have one more shot to tie it after the Raiders missed a front end of a one and one with 7.7 seconds left. The Irish pushed the ball up court after the miss and Mielke was able to get off a long three pointer just before the buzzer that did not fall and would give the Raiders a hard fought 42-39 victory.

Pothoven led the Irish in scoring on the night with 15 points. Logwood would chip in 10 points while McMahon added 7. Mooney 3 points and Greiwe and Mielke 2 each completed the Irish scoring. Logwood would lead the Irish on the glass with 6 rebounds.

IRISH OVERCOME SLOW START TO DEFEAT JAGUARS

As the result of cold first quarter shooting, the Irish found themselves behind 4-0, and tied 6-6 after one quarter. The Irish then heated up and routed host Hilliard Bradley (1-19) 70-36. The six first quarter points came on baskets by Travis Yates, Joshua Ashwill and Chase Sult.

The Irish outscored Bradley 19-9 in the second quarter to take a 25-15 halftime lead. Ashwill paced the Irish with 11 second quarter points, while Yates added 3 and Zac Brown, Travis Wehder and Antonio Bisutti 2 each.

The Irish offense got rolling in the third quarter with sharp passing as most second half baskets came off of assists, including 5 by Bisutti in the half. Scoring became the "Travis" show as Travis Yates scored the last basket of the first half, then he and Travis Wehder scored the first 9 points in the third quarter, and 16 of the first 18. All but one of their baskets during this run was assisted. For the quarter, Wehder had 9 points and Yates 7. Bisutti added 5 third quarter points, while Ashwill, Brown and Sult had 2 each. The Irish led 52-25 entering the fourth period.

The Irish won the fourth period 18-11, as Bisutti and Brown each had 5 points, Wehder 4 and Braxton Wallace and Scott Berg 2 each.

For the night, the Irish placed 4 players in double figues, as Ashwill was high with 15 points, and added 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Wehder added 14 points and 4 rebounds, Bisutti 12 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds, Yates 12 points and 4 rebounds, Brown 9 points, Sult 4 points and Wallace and Berg 2 points each.

The Irish won every statistical category, including shooting 31-48 from the field for 65% compared to 16-36 for Bradley (44%).

The Irish are back in action on Tuesday, Feb 12th at home against a tough non-league foe in Reynoldsburg (15-5).

IRISH OUTPACE THE JAGUARS

With only 2 games remaining in the regular season, the Irish JV are piecing it together. With a dwindling roster, they are still trying to find 5 guys that mesh. Their 46-33 win over Hilliard Bradley proves they are getting closer.

The Irish have been pressing right away in defense, which has helped their momentum in the first half of the game. Andrew McKinley started at point and stroked a 3 and Scott Berg followed with a couple 3's of his own. Power freshman, Cameron Logwood saw time early and made the most of it, bullying his way in for rebounds. He dished one out to Nate Torski who was good for 2! Irish won the first period 13-7! Berg capped a 3 from the top of the key to start out the 2nd. He added another 3 and a couple more to finish with 18 in the first half! Derrick Scott was steady at the helm with a few steals and a nice assist. Nick Pothoven, another solid freshman, snagged some rebounds, added 2 and made both shots at the stripe. The Jaguars had some misses and aggressive defense and rebounding meant we had more chances. Irish were STILL ahead at the half 27-21.

Andrew McKinley led the way in the 2nd half, too when he sunk a jumper. Logwood handed off to Berg inside for a couple. With quick scores, momentum was in our corner! Good pressure on defense meant the Jaguars never kicked it into overdrive. Logwood made the difference, powering in for rebounds and making his at the stripe. He was 2 for 2 there, added 4 other needed points and dished off for 2 assists. Our aggressive play was forcing Bradley to foul and they had two guys with 4 fouls each in the second half. Freshman Brian Johnson made some noise and got a chance at the line, where he sunk one. He was ready for the dish from Logwood for 2 more. Derrick Scott got fouled inside and put the exclamation point on our victory when he sunk his 2 free ones! Unsteady fans o? the Green just closed their eyes praying that the seconds ticked away before the lead did! Our blood pressure was grateful for a solid victory! Irish 46- Bradley 33!

Berg (22), McKinley (7), Pothoven (4), Logwood(6), Johnson (3). Scott (2), Torski (2)

IRISH FROSH TAME JAGUARS

The Irish Frosh jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Hilliard Bradley Jaguars 47-25 on Friday evening. The twenty two point margin of victory was the largest for the Irish this season.

Nick Pothoven got the Irish on the board with a three pointer only 30 seconds into the game to give them an early advantage. Pothoven struck again from deep a minute later and after a Jason Greiwe free throw Pothoven was at it again as he knocked down his third three pointer of the quarter. Greiwe got three the old fashioned way as he took a steal the length of the court for the lay-in and the foul. He would convert the free throw to give the Irish a 13-10 lead. Amari McMahon then continued the three point barrage from the corner and only seconds before halftime Pothoven struck again as he drained a long three to give the Irish a 19-12 lead after one.

The Irish found the going a little tougher in the second quarter as they were only able to put three points on the board. The Jaguars tried to work their way back in it by continuing to pound the ball inside. Paul Lombardo drained a free throw for the Irish and Greiwe converted a beautiful reverse layup inside to put the Irish up ten. The Jaguars would not go away and would score two quick buckets to make the halftime score 22-16 Irish.

The third quarter would start the same way as the beginning of the game as Pothoven drained a three pointer from the wing to get things started. Brian Johnson then got free along the baseline for a nice 10 foot jumper. Pothoven was definitely in a zone as a short time later he drained his sixth three pointer of the game from deep to give the Irish their largest lead of the game. Lombardo continued the hot shooting for the Irish with a three pointer of his own to give the Irish a 34-19 advantage after three quarters. The Irish defense was terrific in the third quarter as they limited the Jaguars to only three points.

The Irish momentum continued in the fourth quarter as Greiwe knocked down a three pointer from the corner and then followed that with a layup just moments later. Several Irish entered the scoring column in the fourth period as everyone on the team made positive contributions. Dylan Kearney knocked down a free throw and Cameron Logwood showed some nifty footwork inside for an easy layup. The Irish continued their aggressive play with Nate Mielke going strong to the hoop for the lay-in and Ezra Disbennett following with a beautiful runner of his own. Cameron Robinson would complete the scoring for the Irish with a free throw as ten Irish players scored in the game. In the end the Irish cruised to a 47-25 victory.

Pothoven led the scoring effort for the Irish with 19 points. Greiwe was also in double figures with 11. Lombardo added 4, McMahon 3, Disbennett, Mielke, Logwood and Johnson 2, and Robinson and Kearney 1 each. Johnso and Greiwe lead the Irish on the boards with 4 each.

IRISH WIN SQUEAKER OVER DARBY

Scioto continues to find the going tougher against most teams, as they work their way through the conference schedule for the second time. After beating Darby 56-30 in early January, the Irish squeaked out a 57-54 win to improve to 16-3 on the season and move into sole possession of second place in the conference with a record of 9-3.

The game started out much like the first meeting, with the Irish taking a 17-6 lead after one quarter. Darby outscored the Irish 14-11 in the second quarter, and trailed 28-20 at the half. Ashwill was high scorer with 11 first half points, followed by Travis Wehder and Zac Brown with 4 each, Kalib Wallace and Travis Yates with 3 each, Chase Sult with 2 and Antonio Bisutti with 1.

After taking a 31-22 lead early in the third quarter, Darby went on a 13-0 run that was fueled by a number of Irish turnovers. The Irish weathered this storm, and after Darby led 35-31 the Irish closed out the quarter an 8-0 run to lead 39-35 entering the fourth period. Ashwill scored 9 of the 11 Irish points in the quarter, while Wallace added the other 2.

A tight fourth quarter saw three lead changes and four ties. After falling behind 42-41, a Wehder free throw tied the game at 42. The Irish then trailed 45-42, but a basket by Ashwill followed by two free throws by Bisutti tied the game at 46. The Irish trailed again 49-46, before an Ashwill three assisted by Brown tied the game at 49, and two free throws by Ashwill gave the Irish the lead at 51-49. After Darby tied the game at 51, another Ashwill basket gave the Irish a 53-51 lead. Ashwill then split two free throws, but Yates rebounded the miss and that led to Wehder getting fouled, where he then spilt of pair of free throws, and the Irish led 55-51 with 49.5 seconds remaining. A basket by Darby closed the gap to 55-53. After an Irish miss, Darby got the ball back and Yates made the game saving play by drawing a charge with 6.4 seconds to play. Yates was then fouled, where he split a pair of free throw to give the Irish a 56-53 lead. The Irish then intentionally fouled Darby with 2 seconds remaining, and after making the first free throw, they intentionally missed the second, however the shot did not find any rim, so it was Irish ball. Yates was fouled immediately where he made of 1 of 2 free throws with .5 seconds remaining and the Irish came away with the 57-54 win.

For the night, Ashwill led the Irish with 32 points, including 21 in the second half. He made 5-6 three pointers and added 9 rebounds. Wehder added 6 points and 5 boards, while Yates added 5 points and 5 boards. Wallace added 5 points, Brown 4 points and 4 boards, Bisutti 3 points and 3 assists and Sult 2 points. In addition to Yates game saving charge drawn, Brown also drew a charge.

Most statistical categories were close as the Irish won the rebounding battle 28-25, while each team had 9 assists and 14 turnovers. The Irish were 7-11 on three pointers for 64%, while Darby was 8-18 for 44%.

The Irish are back in action on Friday, Feb 8th at Hilliard Bradley

PANTHERS CLAW THEIR WAY TO VICTORY OVER IRISH JV

Looking spunky at the onset, Irish were on the board first when Andrew McKinley sunk 2 at the stripe. An early press put pressure on inbounds but down the court assignments were missed and Darby jumped to a 5 point lead. Scott Berg shared with Spencer Stevenson for 2 and sunk a 3. Derrick Scott played a solid first period, with 2 steals and 4 points. Our attempts to get inside were thwarted often, but Berg managed to slip in twice to score at the end of the first half and keep the "W" within reach 18-23.

Berg opened the half with a steal and feed to McKinley who arched a 3 that took and another dish to freshman, Cameron Logwood worked for 2 more. The Irish had some good stops on "D" in the 3rd period and stuck a few more on the board to put us AHEAD 32-28! Logwood did his job and blocked shots to give us more chances that we just did not take advantage of. We got tight in the 4th and gave up the ball a few times and Panthers pulled ahead by 6. Our offense looked out of sink and no one stepped up to be the hero. Berg tried to work his way inside, only to get called for a charge. Sean Garry, always aggressive, came down hard on a rebound attempt and had to come out. The Panthers pounced on us less than last time, when they won by 15. Irish 35- Panthers 41.

IRISH FROSH FALL TO DARBY

The Irish Frosh dug themselves a big hole to start the game, and a spirited fourth quarter comeback was not enough as they fell to the Hilliard Darby Panthers 39-34. The loss brings the Irish record to 7-11 on the season.

The Panthers jumped out quickly by going on a 13-2 run to start the game. The Irish found it difficult to stop the Panthers penetration and to keep them off the boards. Carter Brown scored the first basket of the game for the Irish on a nice steal and coast to coast layup. A few minutes later, Brian Johnson knocked down a baseline three pointer to make the score 15-5 Panthers at the end of the first quarter.

The Irish's offensive struggles continued in the second quarter as they were only able to put three points on the board. A Paul Lombardo free throw and Cameron Logwood jumper completed the Irish scoring for the half. The Panthers were able to build on their lead and took a 23-8 advantage into halftime.

After a quick Panther basket to start the second half that extended their lead to 16 points, the Irish would go on an 11-0 run. Lombardo got things started with a bucket inside and quickly followed that with a baseline jumper. Brown and Logwood would knock down free throws and Johnson would drain his second three pointer of the game to cut the Panther lead to 5 points. The Panthers were able to stop the Irish rally with a free throw, but another layup by Logwood regained the momentum for the Irish. At the end of the third quarter the score was 29-21 Panthers.

The Irish came out determined in the fourth quarter as their defensive intensity gave the Panthers problems. The Irish pressure produced several steals and gave the Irish a chance to close the gap. Nick Pothoven got free along the baseline for a nice runner and quickly followed that with a three pointer from the top of the key. Jason Greiwe then knocked down a floater in the lane and Pothoven would drain another three pointer to cut the Panther lead to two points. A steal by the Irish and free throw by Brown made the score 33-32 Irish, the closest they had been since the opening tip. Even though the Panthers seemed to be on the ropes, they would respond with the next five points. A couple of late free throws by Lombardo would give the Irish hope, but in the end it would not be enough as the Panthers would hold on for a 39-34 victory.

Pothoven led the Irish in scoring with 8 points. Lombardo added 7, Logwood and Johnson 6 each, Brown 5 and Greiwe 2. Logwood led the Irish on the glass with 9 rebounds.

IRISH BOUNCE BACK OVER JONATHAN ALDER

Dublin Scioto had little trouble bouncing back in to the win column a night after being upset by Jerome, routing Jonathan Alder 67-34.

The Irish fell behind 4-2, but then outscored Jonathan Alder 37-3 to take a 39-7 lead early in the third quarter. The run included a 16-0 second quarter that gave the Irish a 33-7 halftime lead. Balanced scoring was led by Joshua Ashwill with 10 points, and he also had 10 rebounds in the half. Travis Wehder added 6 points, Travis Yates 5 points, Antonio Bisutti, Zac Brown and Chase Sult 4 points each.

The Irish increased their lead to 47-16 after three quarters, before winning the fourth quarter 20-18 to finish with the 67-34 win. Brown led the Irish with 10 second half points, while Bisutti added 8, Ashwill 6, Chase Sult and Scott Berg 3 each, and Braxton Wallace and Derek Scott 2 each.

Ashwill led the Irish with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Brown added 14 points, Bisutti 12 points and 7 rebounds, Sult 7 points, Wehder 6 and Yates 5. Berg contributed 3 points on a 3 ball, while Scott added 2 points and 2 nice assists, and Braxton Wallace added 2 points.

The Irish are back in action on Tuesday, Feb 5th at home against Hilliard Darby.

IRISH JVs SEND PIONEERS PACKING

Coming off a hard fought loss, the Irish looked recharged and ready to play on this rare, Saturday night contest. It was "raining 3's" in the first period for the Irish as Andrew McKinkley led the way with two 3's! We saw freshman Carter Brown, in the game early and he launched two 3's of his own. Derrick Scott got in on the action, as he arched one in for 3! Scott Berg had a quick steal and hit a jumper for 2!

The Irish weren't afraid to shoot, but not following shots and no anticipation underneath, gave the Pioneers plenty of chances to keep the score close, even with all our 3's. Spencer Stevenson ended the half putting up 2 and score was 24-25 at the half.

A hopped up Berg came out firing in the second half and popped a 3 and another and another. The fired up Irish stepped up their defense and had the Pioneers seeing green! Berg snuck in a couple more two's to total 13 points in the 3rd period and put the Irish ahead by 9!

Freshman added some punch in the 4th as Nick Pothoven, a difference maker on defense, dominated rebounds in the 4th. Brian Johnson sunk a 3 from the corner and Cameron Logwood added 4 points and helped up on the boards too. Logwood added a sweet assist to Berg underneath for 2 and 1.

Fans , whose blood pressure was still adjusting from the previous nights contest, jumped for joy as the Irish sailed to a 49 - 34 VICTORY over the Jonathan Alder Pioneers! Our first one of the year!

IRISH FROSH DOWN PIONEERS

The Irish Frosh took on the Jonathan Alder Pioneers on Saturday night and were in control of the game from the opening tip. The Irish never trailed in this one and were able to cruise to a 45-27 victory.

The Irish started quickly with Nick Pothoven getting a steal and taking it coast to coast for the layup. Pothoven quickly struck again with a nice floater in the lane and added a free throw to give the Irish an early lead. Jason Greiwe then took over the scoring role with a nice bucket inside and a jumper from the perimeter to give the Irish a 9-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Irish turned up the defensive intensity in the second quarter and the result was several easy buckets. The Irish were able to extend their lead as five Irish players scored in the quarter. Ezra Disbennett converted a beautiful runner in the lane and Cameron Logwood scored inside to keep the Irish rolling. Paul Lombardo also got in on the action with a layup inside and then Amari McMahon really started to heat up. McMahon knocked down two three pointers and added another basket to score eight points in the quarter. Pothoven drained a pull up jumper after a steal to finish the Irish scoring in the quarter and to make the score 25-12 Irish at the half.

The Pioneers played a spirited third quarter and were able to cut into the Irish lead. A few sloppy possessions by the Irish allowed the Pioneers to convert several easy baskets. The Pioneer defense also stiffened as the Irish were limited to eight points in the quarter. Pothoven, Lombardo, Carter Brown and Brian Johnson all scored for the Irish in the third period. Even though the Pioneers gained some momentum, the Irish still held a 33-23 advantage after three.

That would be as close as the Pioneers would get as a strong defensive effort by the Irish limited them to four points in the fourth quarter. On the offensive end Disbennett scored his second basket of the game and Greiwe added another to extend the Irish lead. Logwood then took over offensively by scoring eight points in the quarter. Several of Logwood's baskets came on beautiful moves inside. In the end the Irish were just too much for the Pioneers and the final score was 45-27.

Logwood scored 10 points to lead the Irish offensively. Pothoven added 9, McMahon 8, Greiwe 6, Lombardo and Disbennett 4, and Johnson and Brown 2 each.

JEROME HANDLES IRISH

On a cold night in Dublin, nowhere was it colder than the Irish offensive end of the court, where Scioto shot just 11-43 from the field, including 1-18 on threes. Cold shooting allowed Dublin Jerome to avenge a 30 point loss to the Irish earlier in the season winning an ugly game by the score of 41-35.

For the third straight Scioto-Jerome game, Jerome employed the same defensive strategy, a box and one. And for the second time, it worked to perfection. The Irish were leading 19-16 at half, but Jerome shutout the Irish in the third quarter, 8-0, to take a 24-19 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Irish cut the deficit to 24-22 early in the fourth period, but could get no closer as Jerome converted 17-21 free throws for the game, most of them in the fourth quarter to maintain the lead.

For the night, Antonio Bisutti was high scorer with 13 points and added 3 assists. Joshua Ashwill added 9 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Kalib Wallace added 5 points, Travis Wehder 4 points and 7 rebounds, and Chase Sult 4 points.

The Irish were outrebounded 29-23 on the night, and managed only 7 total assists. The Irish fall to 14-3 on the season and 8-3 in the conference, dropping them back into a tie for second place with Westerville South.

The Irish are back in action Saturday night Feb 2nd at Jonathan Alder.

JEROME HANDLES IRISH JVs ON LAST SECOND FOUL

The Irish kept right up with crosstown rival, Jerome in an overtime battle on Friday night.

Irish got the tip and had 4 score contributors, other than Scott Berg, in the first period. Derrick Scott got inside for a 2, Andrew McKinley sunk a 3, and Brian Chu had a put back for a couple. Nate Torski and Spencer Stevenson both added a couple too. The Celtics had 2 BMUs (big men underneath) and kept feeding them all night to keep the score tight. Chu took a charge, which always gets things buzzing and Berg sunk a 3 toward end of first half! Too much attention inside, left the Celts loose on perimeter where they hit a couple 3's. McKinley added 3 of his own to end the half. Irish were down by 7.

Berg popped one at start of the half, followed it and GOT the rebound, and dished to Stevenson for 2! Freshmen Cameron Logwood posted up for a jumper and made a difference underneath for the Irish. Stevenson caused a few howls from the crowd on a blocked shot and had a steal in the 3rd. Though we had only 6 points in the 3rd, good defense kept it close. BMU's always force fouls and we had 6 on us going into the 4th. Sean Garry had a nice feed to Logwood for a 2 and one. Berg drove for 2 and knocked down a 3 and the crowd was in a frenzy. Celts got to the line and went ahead by 4. Berg's defender was all over him, but he saw an opening and sunk one for 2! Stevenson got fouled inside and went to the stripe where he was a hero, sinking both shots to tie the score and put us into overtime!

Things went the way of the Irish from the start, as we got the tip and the Celtics missed 4 free throws. Stevenson, who played a great game, fouled out. Berg lit it up with a jumper to bring us even. Freshman, Brian Johnson, got fouled with 19 seconds left and he sunk BOTH shots to put us ahead by 2. The Irish need to prevent a shot, or at the very least NOT foul. That didn't happen. Logwood was defending underneath, straight up, hands up, the ball went in and the whistle blew. The Celts didn't miss this free throw and Irish showed grit in this hard fought heartbreaker 46-47.

Berg (16), McKinley (8), Stevenson (6), Logwood (5), Chu (2), Scott (2), Garry (2), Johnson (2), Torski (2)

IRISH FROSH FALL TO THE CELTICS

Looking to avenge their earlier season loss, the Dublin Jerome Celtics frosh jumped out quickly on the Irish Friday night. The Irish were playing catch up from the start, and even though they closed the gap to three points in the fourth quarter, the Celtics held on for the 45-34 victory.

The Celtics went inside early to Colton Irion who scored the first nine points for the Celtics. Jason Greiwe got things started for the Irish with a nice layup inside. Carter Brown then struck from deep with a three pointer from the baseline. After two more Celtics baskets, Paul Lombardo got free inside for a layup to make the score 13-7 Celtics after one.

Cameron Logwood quickly got on the board in the second quarter with a nice move inside for two. Two possessions later he stepped out to the top of the key and drained a three pointer to make the score 15-12 Celtics. After an Amari McMahon free throw the Celtics would score the next five points to extend the lead. Brown then drained his second three pointer of the game to make the score 22-16 Celtics at the half.

After a Celtics basket and free throw to begin the second half that extend their lead to nine points, Nick Pothoven knocked down a pull up jumper just inside the three point line to keep the Irish within striking distance. The teams traded baskets for the next five minutes. Greiwe and McMahon both knocked down 17 foot jumpers and Logwood converted a beautiful drive for the Irish. At the end of the third quarter the score was 33-24 Celtics.

The Irish jumped out quickly in the fourth quarter as they tried to mount a comeback. Brian Johnson drained a baseline jumper and Cory Trotti knocked down a jumper just inside the three point line. The Celtics lead at this point was eight before Johnson scored on a put back inside and followed that with a deep three pointer from the wing to cut the Celtics lead to three points. Unfortunately for the Irish those would be the final points they would score in the game. Some timely free throw shooting by the Celtics allowed them to extend their lead. The Irish could not capitalize on a few opportunities late and the final score was 45-34 Celtics.

Cameron Logwood, Brian Johnson, and Carter Brown led the Irish with 7 points each. Greiwe added 4, McMahon 3, and Pothoven, Lombardo, and Trotti 2 each. Brown led the Irish on the glass with 6 rebounds while Logwood chipped in with 5.

IRISH GAIN BIG WIN AT WESTERVILLE SOUTH

An Antonio Bisutti three pointer gave the Irish a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish en-route to impressive win at Westerville South (12-5) by the score of 68-49. The win gives the Irish a 14-2 record on the year, and places them in sole possession of second place in the conference at 8-2 while South drops to 7-3 in the conference.

The game remained close early with the Irish leading 18-15 after one quarter. Leading 20-17 early in the second quarter, the Irish went on an 11-4 run to close the half. The Irish defense held South to 6 points in the quarter, while scoring 13 to take a 31-21 halftime lead. Joshua Ashwill led the scoring in the half with 13 points, while Bisutti added 9, Travis Wehder 5 and Travis Yates 4.

A strong third quarter pushed the Irish lead to 50-33 entering the fourth. The Irish would increase their lead to 57-35, before a 10-0 run by South cut the lead to 57-45. A Chase Sult basket ignited a 6-0 Scioto run to push the lead back to 18 at 63-45. Ashwill and Bisutti each added 11 points in the half, while Sult added 10, Zac Brown 3 and Wehder 2.

This was another game were contributions were received from many players. Ashwill was the game's high scorer with 24 points, and added 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Bisutti added 20 points, including 9 in the third quarter, and added 6 rebounds. Sult added 10 points, all in the second half and added 6 rebounds. Wehder had a solid overall game with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Yates added 4 points, Brown 3 points on a three ball, and also had 3 rebounds. Kalib Wallace added 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Irish won most statistical categories, outrebounding South 36-25. The Irish also had 17 assists compared to 6 for South. The Irish shot better in all areas, including 5-9 (56%) on threes, 28-48 (58%) on all field goals, and 7-9 (78%) on foul shots, while limiting South to 6-18 (33%) on threes and 18-51 (35%) from the field.

The Irish are back in action on Friday, Feb 1st at home against Dublin Jerome. It will be military appreciation night and there will be extra give aways for lucky fans that night. Be there!!!

IRISH JVS FALL AT WESTERVILLE SOUTH

For once, our 4th period Irish showed up at the start of the game! We got the tip AND Spencer Stevenson put us on the board first with 2. Stevenson showed good anticipation, blocking a lob feed to the Cat's BMU (big man underneath)! Derrick Scott had a nice feed to Scott Berg for 3 and the ever elusive first period points were adding up! Nate Torski and Stevenson were aggressive under the boards, boxing out and keeping rebounds in the hands of the Irish. Stevenson took a dish from freshman, Carter Brown and added a couple more. Freshman, Cameron Logwood, our own BMU, launched a 3 near the end of the half and Irish were down by ONE basket 23-25. The Irish put 17 points on the board in the first period, a first for them this season!

Someone put some catnip in the Gatorade at half-time, as the Wildcats came out ready to play. They were oozing inside for scores off the glass and making jumpers too. They batted the ball away from us at will and the Irish went flat. Shots weren't sticking and the rebounds were not going our way. The Cats were pressing and netting quick steals when we finally passed it out to Berg who fast broke for a needed 2. Berg had a nice steal and pass ahead to Andrew McKinley for a couple more. The Irish did not have a lot of open looks, but Berg had a rimmer fall in for 3. By the 4th quarter, the Irish were running on empty and managed to put only 4 points on the board. The quick Cats seemed more energized as the game went on and they widened the gap big time. Lazy feet meant Irish were fouling and the Cats were solid at the stripe.

Our pot of gold will come when we can string together 4 steady periods of rebounding, minimal turnovers, AND scoring. Final score 37-69

Berg (12), McKinley (8), Logwood (6), Stevenson (4), Scott (3), Pothoven(2), Johnson (2)

IRISH FROSH ROLL AT WESTERVILLE SOUTH

The Irish Frosh played one of their more complete games of the year Tuesday night in downing the Westerville South Wildcats by a score of 44-26. The 18 points margin of victory was the largest of the season for the Irish.

The Irish jumped out quickly on the Wildcats by scoring the game?s first three points. Nick Pothoven knocked down a jumper from the elbow and Brian Johnson converted 1 of 2 free throws for the early lead. The Wildcats slowly worked their way back in it by scoring five straight points. A Paul Lombardo three from the corner again gave the Irish the lead before an easy basket inside by the Wildcats gave them a 7-6 advantage at the end of the first period.

After a Wildcat bucket to start the quarter the Irish would score the next five points. Amari McMahon made a tough driving layup and Pothoven drained a three pointer to give the Irish a two point lead. Cameron Logwood, who was playing in his first game of the year, got on the board by knocking down two free throws and Carter Brown added another. The Wildcats scored two quick baskets, but the Irish responded. Jason Greiwe converted his own steal under the Irish basket for an easy layup and Pothoven added his second three pointer of the quarter shortly before halftime to make the score 19-14 Irish at the half.

The Irish wasted little time in extending their lead in the third period. Pothoven got things rolling with his third three pointer of the game and McMahon got free on the fast break for a layup to give the Irish a nine point lead. The Irish defense stiffened and made things difficult for the Wildcats to find any rhythm offensively. The Irish were able to hold the Wildcats to only five points in the quarter. There would be no let-up in the Irish on the offensive end as they continued their crisp ball movement and hot shooting. Brian Johnson knocked down a three pointer from the wing, Greiwe followed with a jumper from the foul line and Carter Brown broke free inside for a layup to make the score 33-19 Irish after three.

The Irish finished the game strong in the fourth period by never letting the Wildcats gain any momentum. Logwood showed quick feet and nice moves inside as he converted three layups for six points in the quarter. Brown drained a baseline three pointer and added two more free throws to complete the Irish scoring and make the final score 44-26. Every member of the Irish saw action in this game and contributed positively to the victory.

Mark your calendars for the next home game on Feb 1st against cross town rival Dublin Jerome. It will be Military Appreciation Night and we will have extra giveaways for fans that night.

IRISH FROSH FALL AGAIN TO WARRIORS

With a strong second half, the Westerville North Warriors defeated the Irish Frosh 47-31 Friday evening. The Irish tried to avenge an earlier loss to the Warriors, but cold shooting and defensive lapses cost the Irish in the end.

The Warriors jumped out quickly by scoring the game's first seven points. The Irish finally got on the board with a free throw by Carter Brown. Defensively the Irish started to tighten things up, which allowed them to close the gap. Nick Pothoven knocked down a three pointer from the wing and a short time later drained a pull up jumper from the elbow to make the score 8-6 Warriors at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors continued to probe the paint in the second quarter and were able to take advantage of those strong drives to extend their lead to 12-6. The Irish started to find the range offensively as Amari McMahon converted a fast break layup and Paul Lombardo drained a free throw to close the gap. After another Warrior basket, Brian Johnson drained a long three to pull the Irish within one. Jason Greiwe then picked off a pass and took it the length of the floor for a layup to give the Irish their first lead which made the halftime score 15-14 Irish.

The Warriors wasted no time regaining the lead in the third quarter as they scored the first four points. The Irish tried to keep it close as Greiwe made a strong drive to the hoop for a layup and Pothoven knocked down a baseline three to cut the Warrior lead to one. The Warriors would not let up and continued their hot shooting. They scored 17 points in the quarter to take a 31-24 lead after three. Mielke added a basket inside and Brown drained two free throws in the quarter for the Irish.

The Irish tried to cut into the Warriors lead in the fourth quarter as Mielke scored inside and Pothoven drained a turnaround baseline jumper. Unfortunately for the Irish multiple defensive lapses led to easy buckets inside for the Warriors as they were able to extend their lead. The Irish continued to play hard but were only able to muster free throws by Lombardo and Brown the rest of the way. In the end the Warriors were too much to handle as they defeated the Irish 47-31.

Nick Pothoven led the Irish in scoring with 10 points. Mielke added 5, Brown and Greiwe 4, Johnson and Lombardo 3 and McMahon 2. Brian Johnson led the Irish on the glass with 6 rebounds while Mielke chipped in with 5.

IRISH EASILY HANDLE MARYSVILLE

Dublin Scioto used balance scoring and contributions from everyone in routing Marysville by the score of 72-28 to improve to 13-1 on the season.

The Irish led 23-10 after one quarter, and went on a 6-0 run to end the half and led 34-17 at halftime. The Monarchs could not handle the Irish defense, as the Irish forced 12 first half turnovers, and 25 for the game. Many Irish points came off of turnovers. Joshua Ashwill led the Irish scoring in the half with 10, followed by Travis Yates with 8, Antonio Bisutti and Travis Wehder with 5 each, and Chase Sult, Zac Brown and Kalib Wallace with 2 each.

The Irish went on a 30-5 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to take a 64-22 lead and seal the victory with the final score of 72-28. Second half scoring was balanced led by Brown with 9, Bisutti and Sult with 8 each, Ashwill with 7, Wehder with 4 and Andrew McKinley with 2.

MONARCHS DROP IRISH JVS

With guard Scott Berg leading the way with 5 three pointers, the Irish showed some grit in a 54-68 loss to the Monarchs of Marysville on January 22nds game.

The Monarchs came out fluttering with big guys gobbling up rebounds and 4 different guards putting in buckets. The Irish just could not get the press break down and we were constantly seeing red and blue. With only 3 points in the first period, we fell behind by 14.

Eli Pack stepped it up in the 2nd period and took a charge to give us possession, and he added 8 of his 10 points for the game here. The Monarchs spun the press again and again and it worked. Andrew McKinley added 5 points in this period and Spencer Stevenson blocked 2 shots and added 4 more to the scoreboard. Freshman Carter Brown came in firing and added a 3 and 2 in this period. Derek Scott launched a "Hail Mary" from half court at the buzzer and we ended the half on a positive note, but still in the cellar 23-37.

The Coach's half time pep talk worked on Scott Berg, who came out fired up in the second. He had several steals and popped a 3 to give us some inertia. Stevenson had a nice steal, dished to Berg and Carter Brown, alert underneath, had the put back to keep the energy flowing. Nick Pothoven, another freshman ready to help, had a great assist to Berg who was seeing it and added ANOTHER 3 from top of key. Even with Marysville's coach yelling "STAY ON 14 EVERY SECOND" from the sidelines, it mattered not, as Berg put up one more 3 over the arms of his defender. Berg had 14 points in the 4th and never let Marysville get comfortable. Spencer Stevenson went to the stripe and proved that "following your shot" really does work when he shanked the free throw, then followed it in for the put back. Brian Johnson added 2 toward the end of the game and with 3 freshmen in the game, the Irish finally broke the press .

The Monarchs had 4 guys in double figures and, in spite of a stellar 2nd, half, the Irish just could not overcome the 14 point hole they dug in the first period. We need all of our guards scoring a few in every period , work on the press break and control the constant turnovers. We have our biggest point count for the year so far with 54!

IRISH FROSH FALL HARD TO MONARCHS

The Marysville Monarchs jumped all over the Irish Frosh from the opening tip on Tuesday night and the Irish were never able to recover. The Monarchs cruised to a 55-24 win.

The Monarchs jumped out to a quick 10-0 by converting several easy layups inside and knocking down a couple of three pointers from the perimeter. Nate Mielke finally got the Irish on the board with two free throws. Jason Greiwe scored a short time later with a nice layup inside, but the Irish found themselves trailing 15-4 after one.

Paul Lombardo got things started for the Irish in the second quarter with a nice layup inside, but that would be the final points for the Irish in the quarter. The Monarchs displayed beautiful ball movement as they were able to get open time after time for uncontested shots. They also played stingy defense as the Irish were not able to get anything going on the offensive end. The Monarchs finished the second quarter on a 21-0 run to make the score 36-6 at halftime.

Things did not get any better for the Irish in the third quarter as they were once again only able to muster one basket. Jason Greiwe scored on a layup, but the Monarchs extended their lead to 45-8 after three quarters. To the Irish credit, they never stopped competing. With the game already decided, the Irish were finally able to find a little rhythm late as Carter Brown scored eight points in the fourth quarter on several nice moves inside. Amari McMahon scored four points in the quarter, with two of them coming on a strong drive and beautiful finish. Lombaro added another basket and Brian Johnson got on the board with a layup. Even with a strong finish, the final score was 55-24 Monarchs.

Brown led the Irish with 8 points. McMahon, Lombardo, and Greiwe added 4 each, while Johnson and Mielke both chipped in with 2. Nick Pothoven led the Irish on the glass with 6 rebounds.

STRONG SECOND HALF CARRIES IRISH TO VICTORY OVER WESTERVILLE CENTRAL

A slow start found the Irish in an unfamiliar position early in this game, as numerous easy baskets by Westerville Central led to a 20-9 lead for Central after one quarter. After taking a 3-0 lead the Irish were outscored 20-6 the remainder of the quarter. The Irish did not secure one defensive rebound in the first quarter, as Central controlled their offensive boards which provided many of their points.

The Irish performed better in the second quarter and outscored Central 11-8, but still trailed 28-20 at the half. Antonio Bisutti and Joshua Ashwill were high scorer in the half with 8 points each, followed by Zac Brown with 4, including a nice steal that he took the distance for a layup.

The Irish inched their way back into the game early in the third period, but still trailed 31-26 with 3 and a half minutes to go. The Irish then went on a 26-3 run that carried into the fourth period and provided the Irish with a 52-34 lead. The Irish took the lead for good at 32-31 when Travis Yates converted 2 of 2 free throws. During the run the Irish converted 12 of 12 free throws, including 4 on technical foul shots. Ashwill led the scoring in the second half with 15 points, while Travis Wehder added 9, Brown, Bisutti and Travis Yates 4 each, Chase Sult 2 and Derek Scott 1.

The Irish were cold from three point land were they did not convert any on the night. However, they were solid at the free throw line, converting 25-30 for 83% while Central converted only 8-19 for 42%.

Ashwill was high scorer in the game with 23 points, including 9-9 free throws. Bisutti added 12 points. Wehder played like a man possessed in the second half, scoring all 9 of his points in the third quarter, and adding 10 of his 13 rebounds in the half. Brown had a solid game contributing 8 points and 7 boards. Yates added 4 points, Sult added 2 points and 2 blocked shots, while Derek Scott tallied the other Irish point. Bisutti and Yates also each drew a charge on the night.

The Irish now stand at 12-1 on the season, including a 7-1 record in conference play, good for second place. The Irish play next on Tuesday, Jan 22 at home against Marysville.

IRISH JVs SHOW HEART IN WARHAWK BATTLE

Westerville Central Warhawks looked solid from the tip with a BMU (Big Man Underneath) effortlessly tossing in 3 shots and a couple quick guards running the floor. The Irish had their "dukes up" though and Spencer Stevenson knocked down 2 and Scott Berg followed with 2 more. Andrew McKinley measured up a 3 at top of the key and added 4 more in the first period. Irish were playing ?D? and turnovers were under control to keep score tight. Sean Garry shook up the Hawks with a steal and nice assist to Berg for 2 and 1! Freshman, Jason Grewie came in and added a couple. Berg kept the momentum going with a strip and drive for 2! Score was 20 all at end of half.

Brian Chu had a put back for 2 to start the second half. Eli Pack had a sweet bomb pass to Berg, who fast broke for 2! Positive momentum was running rampant on the floor and with the Irish fans, starving for a victory! Eil Pack drove for 2 more and Berg had a take away for 2 more! Irish moved within 3! The Hawks quick guards were back at it and slipped inside to score again. They then sunk a 3. The frenzied 4th quarter Irish were not done! Berg had a vital steal with seconds left to pull us within 4! The fouling began, our scoring stopped and the Warhawks converted at the stripe to win 48-41. Berg had a big game with 16, but got help from Eli Pack (9)) and Andrew McKinley (7), to give us the most points on the board this season. With more points on the board, fewer turnovers and aggressive "D", we'll see a "W" soon! Irish 41 Warhawks 48

IRISH FROSH FALL TO WARHAWKS

The Irish Frosh saw their two game winning streak come to a close on Friday night as they fell at home to the Westerville Central Warhawks 43-40 in overtime.

The Irish followed their recent trend of solid offensive execution in the first quarter. Nate Mielke was able to break free off two high post cuts for easy layups and Carter Brown drained a three pointer from the wing to get the Irish out to an early lead. A few careless possessions and Irish turnovers allowed the Warhawks to get back in it by going on an 8-0 to take a 12-7 lead. The rest of the quarter was back and forth with each team trading buckets. Jason Greiwe scored on a put back and Brian Johnson knocked down three pointers on consecutive possessions to make the score 18-15 Warhawks after one.

The second quarter was a struggle for both teams on the offensive end. The Irish turned up their defensive intensity and limited the Warhawks to just two points in the quarter. The Irish were able to capitalize on the Warhawk struggles from field to take a 22-20 lead at halftime. Nate Mielke scored on two layups in the quarter and added a three from the top of the key to help the Irish retake the lead.

The Irish jumped out quickly in the third quarter as Jason Greiwe scored inside to extend the Irish lead. The Warhawks came right back with four straight points before Brown converted a beautiful three point play to put the Irish back in front. Greiwe was able to score again with a pull up jumper in transition and Nick Pothoven knocked down a jumper from the elbow to give the Irish a 31-26 lead after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Mielke was able to score two easy baskets off the same high post cut that worked so well in the first quarter to keep the Irish lead at five before the Warhawk defensive pressure started to pay dividends. A couple of easy baskets in transition and put backs on the offensive glass enabled the Warhawks to get right back in it. Mielke converted a three point play off a tough drive in the paint, but the Warhawks had the ball with the game tied with under a minute to go. They held the ball looking for the last shot and the win, but the Irish defense toughened and a missed shot by the Warhawks and a desperation miss by the Irish as time expired sent the game into overtime.

The Warhawks started quickly in the extra period by scoring four quick points. The Irish cut the lead in half with a nice scoop shot by Greiwe. After a Warhawk free throw the score was 43-40. The Irish did not capitalize on a couple of chances to tie it, but after two Warhawk missed free throws they had one last chance. Unfortunately the Irish were not able to get off a three pointer to tie it and the final score was 43-40 Warhawks.

Mielke led the Irish in scoring with 18 points while Greiwe added 8, Johnson and Brown 6 and Pothoven 2. Pothoven led the Irish on the glass with 7 rebounds while Greiwe added 4 steals.

ST CHARLES OVER IRISH JVs

It was "raining 3's" for the Cardinals during the first half of this contest and there were multiple players making them, which was hard to defend. Irish got a few shots off that did not take and Eli Packed dished Spencer Stevenson inside and broke the drought with 2. Andrew McKinley, who started at point, showed the Cards they weren't the only ones who could shoot 3's and added 2 of his own in the first half. McKinley added 5 more points in the first and was high scorer for the game. Everyone contributed to turnovers, which gave the Cards a nice lead 22-10 at end of half.

Sean Garry had a nice pass inside to Brian Chu for a couple off the glass to start the second half. Scott Berg, quiet in the first half, got his first bucket of the game. Nick Pothoven made his time count, feeding Garry for two and fired up a 3. The Cards had 3 guys in double figures and made easy transitions to the basket. As they always do, the Irish picked it up in the 4th period. McKinley nailed another 3 and energy spread. Berg added a jumper for 2. Fouling started and Cards took advantage of time at the line to widen the lead to 13. McKinley had a nice feed to Carter Brown for 2 and Chu took a charge to give us the ball back. The game ended with Berg feeding Chu for 2. McKinley was a calming force on the floor and his leadership showed in this game. He and Berg need to score points in the same game. More points and fewer turnovers will give us the ever elusive "W"! Irish down 36-52

IRISH FROSH KNOCK OFF ST. CHARLES

The Irish won their second game in a row Tuesday night with a 51-45 victory at St. Charles. A strong effort by the Irish led to their largest winning margin of the season.

Things did not start out well for the Irish as the Cardinals jumped out to a 7-0 lead. St. Charles capitalized on strong play inside and good shooting from the perimeter to take the early advantage. The Irish slowly worked their way back in the game with Nate Mielke getting things started with a layup. Amari McMahon followed quickly with a steal and coast to coast lay in to cut the Cardinals lead to 7-4. The Cardinals knocked down a couple of long three pointers before Nick Pothoven got free inside for a layup and a short time later connected on a three of his own to make the score at the end of the first quarter 12-9 Cardinals.

The Irish started quickly in the second quarter with Carter Brown scoring two quick baskets with strong moves in the paint. His second basket gave the Irish their first lead of the night at 13-12. Paul Lombardo then got in the scoring column with two strong layups of his own to continue the momentum. The Irish really stepped up the defensive intensity in the second quarter and were able to hold the Cardinals to only one field goal. On the offensive end the Irish remained hot when Brown drained a three pointer from the wing and Pothoven converted an easy layup off a Mielke steal. The Irish went to the locker room with a 22-14 lead.

The third quarter brought more of the same on the offensive end for the Irish with Mielke getting things started with a strong drive. He was fouled on the play and converted the free throw for the three point play. Pothoven knocked down his second three of the night and McMahon followed with a three of his own to keep the Irish comfortably in the lead. After three quarter the score was 33-24 Irish.

The Cardinals would not go away and turned up the intensity to start the fourth quarter. They were able to quickly cut into the Irish lead with a long three pointer and a couple of free throws. The Irish did not get rattled and Mielke scored any easy one inside, Brown knocked down a free throw and Pothoven converted a steal into a coast to coast layup to once again extend the Irish lead to 10 points. The Cardinals were forced to extend their pressure full court, but it did not work as Brian Johnson broke free and converted a nice pass from McMahon into an easy layup. The Cardinals were forced to foul in the last two minutes by Carter Brown made them pay by knocking down 7 or 8 free throws to seal the victory.

Brown led the Irish in scoring on the night with 16 points. Pothoven added 12, Mielke 9, Johnson and McMahon 5 and Lombardo 4. Pothoven led the Irish on the glass with 6 rebounds while he and McMahon totaled 3 steals each.

IRISH FROSH SURVIVE BATTLE WITH THE STALLIONS

The Iris Frosh took on Saint Francis DeSales Saturday morning, January 12th at Dublin Scioto. This proved to be another exciting game for the Irish as they staved off a late rally from the Stallions to hold on for a 52-49 victory.

The 52 points were the most the Irish has scored this season. This was the second game in a row where the Irish seemed to find some rhythm offensively and began to once again see their shots go through the basket. The first quarter was back and forth with the Stallions holding a 12-11 lead after one. Nate Mielke got the Irish on the board with a beautiful driving layup which was quickly followed by a floater in the lane from Nick Pothoven. Brian Johnson then drove hard to the basket finishing with a tough runner. Mielke then knocked down two free throws and Johnson struck again with a three pointer from the wing.

The second quarter remained tight with neither team able to get much breathing room. The Irish continued their crisp ball movement with Carter Brown hitting Pothoven for the layup off the nice inbounds play. Johnson then knocked down his second three of the half and Amari McMahon struck from deep to give the Irish a 19-14 lead. The Stallions would not go away and battled back with six straight points to grab the lead. A steal by the Irish and nice transition layup by McMahon completed the first half scoring and gave the Irish a 21-20 halftime lead.

The third quarter was a game of runs. Pothoven scored again off another inbounds play and beautiful feed from Brown before the Stallions went on an 11-0 run to take a 33-25 lead. The Irish didn?t panic and slowly worked their way back in it. Paul Lombardo made a nice turnaround jumper in the lane and Pothoven drained a three pointer from the wing to cut the Stallion?s lead to 35-32. Nate Mielke followed a short time later with another layup and then Pothoven struck again from deep to tie the score at 37. With the quarter coming to a close Pothoven stole the ball and drove coast to coast for the layup and was fouled. He knocked down the free throw for a conventional three point play giving the Irish a 40-37 lead after three. The Irish extended their lead in the fourth quarter as they came out on fire. Jason Greiwe drained a long three pointer from the baseline and followed that with a tough driving layup. Pothoven then knocked down his third three pointer of the game and Greiwe struck again with another layup in which he was fouled. He completed his own three point play from the foul line to extend the Irish lead to 51-41. The Stallions then turned up the defensive intensity and the Irish had difficulty handling the pressure. The Irish turned it over on consecutive possessions and the Stallions fought their way back in it with eight straight points to cut the Irish lead to 51-49. That set the stage for a chaotic final minute. The Irish missed two front ends of 1 and 1?s but the Stallions were not able to capitalize. Nate Mielke finally knocked down a free throw and the Stallions missed a desperation three at the buzzer to make the final score 52-49 Irish.

Pothoven lead the scoring for the Irish with 18 points and chipped in with four rebounds. Greiwe and Johnson both added 10 points while Mielke added 7, Mcmahon 5, and Lombardo 2. Johnson led the way for the Irish on the glass with 5 rebounds.

IRISH JVS DROP TWO TIGHT ONES

Wolves Nip Irish 27-23

Irish got the tip, but turned it right back over and Wolves got on the board first. Nate Torski struck first for the Irish and Eli Pack followed suit. Spencer Stevenson and Torski were aggressively rebounding in the first period, which kept the score close. The Irish were evenly matched, size wise with the Wolves, which had us Irish fans dreaming of a "W!"

Sean Garry had a nice assist to Berg underneath and then sunk a 3 to end the half. Aggressive rebounds and so- so shooting from the Wolves meant the Irish won the first half 11-6! Scott Berg, quiet the first half had a couple deuces and Pack hit a jumper to keep us in contention the second half. Sean Garry, who played a good game all around, drove to the basket and got a 2 and 1. Wolves threw up a prayer at the end of the 3rd to tie the score at 23 all and that was the last we heard from the Irish offense. Though Spencer Stevenson had a couple rebounds and even a steal, it wasn't enough. Turnovers gave the Wolves a 4 point lead, which was enough for a victory. Disappointing to lose a winnable game.

Berg (9), Garry (8), Pack (4),Torski (2)

BRADLEY JAGUARS OVER IRISH JV

The Irish JV got off to a slower start than usual and only managed one point in the first period in a 34-48 loss to the Jaguars of Hilliard Bradley. The Jaguars jumped to a 9 point lead in the first period, getting purrrrfect looks and swooshing every shot they took. Eli Pack sunk a free throw to put us on the board. The Irish offense was slow to generate baskets and turnovers meant we were "seeing blue" all period. Sean Garry took a 3 to the bank to start off the second period. Brian Chu was lively underneath and got to the line but nothing stuck. Scott Berg hit a couple of jumpers in traffic and sunk 2 free throws, but we were down by 13 at end of half.

Brian Chu took the charges! and took em , and took em, setting up to take 4 for the game! (maybe a Chuey record?) Eli Pack had a brisk break for a deuce and a quick jumper for 2 more. Berg sunk a 3, his only score in the third period. Nate Torski, who played aggressive "D" and saved a few baskets, did foul out in the 4th. He also added a sweet 3 from the corner. Carter Brown, a freshman, saw some time and scored on an assist from Berg. Another freshman, Nick Pothoven, got in the thick of things and took a feed in traffic from Berg. The basket didn't take, but Pothoven was good for 1 at the stripe. A couple team steals gave us momentum and drives by Scott Berg took him to the stripe in the 4th, where he was 5 for 6.

In a quick, confident play, Garry fed to Spencer Stevenson who fed to Berg for a couple and Berg had another assist to Spencer Stevenson who rolled one off the glass for 2 more. The Irish shot more in the last period than they did all game! They truly become "the fighting Irish" in the 4th period. Once we keep the "fight" going all game, we'll win one! Irish 34- Jaguars 48. Berg (16), Pack (5), Garry (5), Torski (3), Stevenson (2), Brown (2), Pothoven (1)

IRISH FROSH START QUICK THEN FALTER IN LOSS TO BRADLEY

The Irish Frosh were back in action Tuesday evening with a home contest against Hilliard Bradley. The Irish looked fresh and jumped out quickly on the Jaguars taking a 16-4 lead after one quarter. The Irish displayed crisp ball movement and aggressive drives during the first period. Nate Mielke got things started with a strong driving layup followed by a nice back cut and quick pass from Nick Pothoven leading to another layup. A short time later Pothoven drained a 3 pointer from the wing and Mielke broke free for another layup forcing the Jaguars to call timeout. After the timeout Pothoven again found the range from deep and Paul Lombardo scored two quick buckets on a nice move inside and a jumper from the foul line giving the Irish a 12 point advantage.

The 12 point advantage proved to be the largest lead of the night for the Irish as they suddenly went cold from the floor. The Jaguars started quick in the second quarter with six straight points to cut the lead to 16-10. Missed shots and turnovers plagued both teams for much of the quarter until Lombardo drained 2 free throws and Mielke added another layup to make the halftime score 20-10 Irish.

Bradley started quickly with a 3 pointer from the wing in the third quarter before Pothoven stole an outlet pass for a quick bucket to get the Irish going. Bradley slowly began to chip away at the Irish lead with strong drives and crisp cuts leading to easy buckets and points from the foul line. Mielke was able to get inside for another layup and Lombardo scored an easy bucket off a nice pass from Brian Johnson. However, the Jaguars were able to cut the Irish lead to 26-24 after three quarters.

The Irish were not able to reverse the momentum in the fourth period and they continued to struggle from the field. Bradley made a quick layup and a short time later added 2 free throws to take their first lead of the game. A couple of sloppy possessions by the Irish didn?t cost them as they still only trailed by 1 point with 1:40 to go. After a missed shot by the Irish they were forced to foul. Bradley drained both free throws to take a 3 point lead at 29-26. The Irish then had 2 chances to tie the game but Carter Brown and Pothoven both missed three point attempts. The Irish fouled again but Bradley missed the front end of the 1 and 1. The Irish called timeout with 3 seconds remaining to set up the final play. Bradley defended the final play well and the Irish were only able to get off a desperation attempt that didn?t fall allowing the Jaguars to steal the victory.

Nate Mielke led the Irish with 10 points while Pothoven and Lombardo chipped in with 8 each. Lombardo tallied 7 rebounds while Pothoven added 5 rebounds and 4 steals.

IRISH FROSH SUFFER DEFEAT AT DARBY

The first game back from the Holiday break can often times be a tough one. This proved to be true for the Irish frosh as they lost 46-31 Friday night at Hilliard Darby.

Darby jumped on the Irish from the start. They were able to force the Irish into multiple turnovers in the first quarter that they converted into easy lay ups and three point plays. Offensively the Irish had difficulty finding the mark and settling into a rhythm. Carter Brown got the Irish started with a nice put back inside and a short time later converted another bucket to keep things close. After several empty possessions Nate Mielke found the range from deep and knocked down a three pointer. That was all the Irish could generate in the first quarter and they found themselves trailing 16-7 after one.

In the second quarter things didn't get any better as there continued to be a lid on the basket for the Irish. On the defensive end the Irish also struggled to slow down the Darby attack. Transition baskets and strong drives to the hoop allowed Darby to extend their lead. A long 3 pointer from Darby from just inside half court at the halftime buzzer gave them a 32-10 lead at the break. Brown was the only Irish player who entered the scoring column during the second quarter by draining a three pointer from the top of the key.

The Irish came out in the second half and showed some fight and competitiveness as they tried to get back in it. They began to find their shooting stroke as Amari McMahon knocked down a 3, and Paul Lombardo took the ball strong to the hoop multiple times converting a layup and making two free throws. Brown scored again and Brian Johnson converted 1 of 2 free throws. Darby refused to let the Irish close the gap as they were able to extend their lead to 45-20 after three quarters.

The Irish continued to play hard in the fourth quarter and were able to limit Darby to only one free throw in the final period. Offensively the Irish continued to wipe off the cob webs from the break and began to find some rhythm offensively. Brian Johnson knocked down a long three pointer, Lombardo converted again inside and Mielke and Brown again knocked down shots. The Irish outscored Darby 11-1 in the final period making the final score 46-31. Even though the Irish started slow they continued to fight and where able to outscore Darby 21-14 in the second half.

Brown led the Irish with 13 points. Lombardo added 6, Mielke 5, Johnson 4, and McMahon 3.

The Irish offense struggled in the second half, as they were outscored 18-13 in the third quarter as Brooke fought hard to get back into the game. The Irish still led 52-36 after three, but Brooke would score the first 7 points of the fourth quarter to close to within 9 at 52-43. Bisutti added 5 in the third quarter, while Ashwill and Chase Sult had 3 each, and Wehder 2. The Irish offense managed only one field goal in the final period on a nice follow-up after an offensive rebound by Brown. But the Irish did add 7 free throws in the quarter, and held on for the 61-48 victory.

Ashwill led the Irish with 23 points, including 10 of 11 free throws, and added 8 rebounds, while Bisutti added 20 points, 7 boards and 5 assists. Wehder added 7 points and 6 rebounds, Brown 5 points, Sult 3 points and 4 rebounds and Yates 3 points.

Joshua Ashwill led the Irish with 9 first half points, while Antonio Bisutti added 5, Chase Sult 4, Andrew McKinley 3, and Travis Wehder and Kalib Wallace 2 each.

IRISH WIN OVER CASA ROBLES (CA) (PA)

In a game where the Irish looked like a team that got up early in the morning and travelled to Orlando before playing the game, the Irish had just enough to hold on late and gain a 50-47 victory over Casa Robles, California in the opening round of the KSA Tournament at the Walt Disney Resort in Orlando.

The Irish trailed 13-10 after one quarter and were down 18-12 before going on an 8-0 run that led to a 22-20 halftime lead. Balanced first half scoring was led by Joshua Ashwill with 7 points, Antonio Bisutti, Travis Yates and Kalib Wallace with 3 points each, and Travis Wehder, Zac Brown and Chase Sult with 2 each.

The Irish moved out to a 30-22 lead early in the fourth quarter before Casa Robles went on a 13-0 run to take a 35-30 lead before a Bisutti three pointer at the buzzer made the score 35-33 Case Robles after 3 quarters. The Irish scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to complete a 13-0 run of their own and take a 43-35 lead. However, woes at the foul line where the Irish missed five in a row, including 3 one-and-one opportunities, allowed Casa Robles to stay in the game. The Irish hung on for the 50-47 victory.

Ashwill was high scorer with 14 points and also had 5 steals. Sult added 10 points while Bisutti had 9 points. 8 assists and 10 rebounds, Wallace 8 points, Wehder 4, Yates 3 and Brown 2.

Casa Robles' Sacrament State recruit 6' 10" Eric Stuteville led all scorers with 20 points. The Irish move to 6-1 on the year, while Casa Robles drops to 8-4.

IRISH DOMINATE CROSS TOWN RIVAL JEROME

The Celtics buried a three pointer on their first possession of the game to take a 3-0 lead, but would not score another basket from the field until there was 4:14 remaining in the third quarter, as the Irish dominated this night finishing with a 63-33 victory.

The Celtic's initial defensive strategy was to play a box and one, face guarding Joshua Ashwill. This strategy was effective last year and led to a Celtic victory. Antonio Bisutti made them pay this year, driving to the basket and either getting fouled or finishing, scoring 10 of the first 15 Irish points. The Irish led 13-4 after one quarter, as Bisutti scored 8 and Chase Sult added 5.

The Celtic changed defensive strategies throughout the night, but none of them were able to stop the Irish. Scioto outscored the Celtics 19-5 in the second quarter to take a commanding 32-9 halftime lead. Second quarter scoring was more balances as Ashwill and Travis Wehder scored 6 each, Travis Yates 3, and Bisutti and Zac Brown 2 each.

The Irish continued their dominance in the third quarter, outscoring Jerome 23-6 to take a 55-15 lead into the final period. The highlight of the night came as the third period ended. The Irish inbounded the ball under the Celtic basket with 5 tenths of a second on the clock. Ashwill redirected a long, perfect pass from Bisutti at the Irish foul lane that found the bottom of the nets as the buzzer sounded! A number of Irish found the scorebook in the third period, led by Ashwill with 7, Yates and Brown with 4 each, and Bisutti, Wehder, Andrew McKinley and Kalib Wallace with 2 each.

After the Irish scored the first two baskets of the fourth period to lead 59-15, Jerome finished the game by outscoring the Irish 18-4 making the final count 63-33. Wallace scored 4 in the quarter, while Yates and Bisutti added 2 each.

For the night, Bisutti was high scorer with 14 points, and added 3 steals. Ashwill added 13 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Yates added 9 points and drew the only charge of the night. Wehder added 8 points and 10 rebounds. Wallace and Brown added 6 points each, Sult 5, and McKinley 2.

The Irish won every statistical category, shooting 49% from the field (27-55) while Jerome shot just 18% (10-55). The Irish won the rebounding battle 42-34.

The Irish now stand at 4-1, including 2-1 in the conference.

The Irish next game is Saturday, Dec 22nd at home against Westerville South on Alumni night, before heading to Orland Florida to participate in the KSA tournament from Dec 28 - Jan 1.

IRISH GUT OUT WIN OVER WESTERVILLE SOUTH

The Irish gutted out a tough victory over Westerville South by the score of 48-43.

The game started out as a game of runs, as the Irish jumped out to an 8-0 lead before Westerville South went on a 7-0 run, before the Irish finished the half on an 11-2 run to lead 19-9 at the half. Both teams played solid defense, a trademark of both schools. All five starters found the scoring column in the half, led by Antonio Bisutti with 6, Travis Wehder with 5, Travis Yates with 4, and Chase Sult and Joshua Ashwill with 2 each.

A Yates three pointer to start the second half provided the Irish a 22-9 lead, before South finished the quarter on an 23-8 run. South took their first lead of the night at 32-30 on a buzzer beating three pointer to end the quarter. Wehder added 4 points in the quarter, Yates 3, and Sult and Bisutti 2 each.

The Irish fell behind by five points to open the fourth quarter at 35-30, before a long Ashwill three cut the lead to 35-33. A South basket extended their lead to 37-33 before an Ashwill drive netted two and cut the lead to 37-35. The Irish then fell behind 40-35 on a South three, but the Irish defense buckled down from that point, and the Irish converted 11 of 11 free throws down the stretch to pull out the win. Two freebies each by Zac Brown and Ashwill cut the lead to 40-39, before Bisutti gave the Irish the lead at 42-41 on a drive to the basket that led to a traditional three point play. A south basket put them back ahead 43-42, but Wehder calmly connected on both ends of a one and one to give the Irish the lead for good at 44-43. Ashwill sunk four of four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Ashwill was high scorer with 13 points and added 6 boards. Wehder and Bisutti added 11 points each, Yates had 7, Sult 4, and Brown 2 points and five boards.

The difference in the game was free throw shooting, where the Irish converted 18 of 20, while South converted 6 of 12. The Irish shot 41% from the field on 14-34, but only 28% from three point range on 2-7. South shot 32% from the field on 14-44, but drained 9 of 20 three pointers for 45%. The Irish won the rebounding battle 27-25.

The Irish are now 5-1 on the season, including 3-1 in the conference as they head to Orlando for three games, starting with a 3PM game on Dec 28 against Casa Robles HS out of California.

WESTERVILLE SOUTH DEFEAT IRISH JV

Too many men on the floor resulted in a technical foul and got the Irish off on the wrong foot in a loss to Westerville South on Dec. 22, 2012. The towering Wildcats jumped to a lead quick and only increased it as the game progressed. Joe Stevens put us on the board with 2, Spencer Stevenson had a put back, and Scott Berg added 5 points for the half. South dominated in all statistical categories. After a long drought, Sean Garry tossed in 2. Berg had a nice steal near end of half, but we were still down 19-27.

The Irish came out with some fire after the half. Berg had a nice assist to Eli Pack for 2, but any momentum was short-lived. The Irish had trouble executing on offense. Sean Garry had a nice steal, but a travel put the ball right back in Wildcats claws. Freshmen, Carter Brown and Nick Pothoven got a few minutes of play time and Brown scored 2.

IRISH FROSH ESCAPE WESTERVILLE SOUTH IN OT

The Irish started the game with great intensity on both ends of the court. Brian Johnson was very aggressive offensively getting the Irish off to a quick start. Johnson scored two quick buckets and Jason Greiwe followed quickly after with two buckets of his own to give the Irish an early lead. The Irish were then able to extend that lead to 12-4 with a nice bucket by Nick Pothoven and a lay-up by Nate Mielke. The Wildcats cut into that lead with a couple easy baskets of their own before Johnson struck again with a long jumper to give the Irish a 14-8 lead after the first quarter.

The Irish frosh picked up their first win of the young season last night with a 31-25 win at Marion Harding. It was a game of spurts with a strong 4th quarter by the Irish leading to the six point win.

The Presidents jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Nate Mielke drained a 3 pointer from the top of the key to get the Irish on the board.
